How we write, check and update our guides

Last updated: 2026-10-04

Our guides are written for Australian families who are planning a funeral or a memorial, often in a hard week and often on a phone. This page explains who writes them, where the facts come from, and what we do when something needs fixing.

Who writes and checks each guide

Every guide names two people at the top of the page: the person who wrote it and the person who reviewed it. Each name links to a page about that person and the guides they've worked on.

The reviewer is a different person from the writer. They check that the facts match the sources, that the steps are in the right order, and that nothing reads more harshly than it needs to.

Our guides may be edited with the help of AI tools. Nothing is published until the named writer and reviewer have checked and approved it, and every fact in it is checked against a primary source.

Where our facts come from

Facts about laws, government payments, registering a death, superannuation and costs come from primary sources. That means Australian government agencies (such as Services Australia, Moneysmart, the Australian Taxation Office and each state and territory's Births, Deaths and Marriages registry), recognised industry bodies, and the support services themselves.

We don't use another blog or another company's marketing as the source of a fact. Our guides list their sources at the end, with the date we last checked each one. We're adding these lists to our first memorial video guides now, and every new guide has one from the day it's published.

We never make up statistics, studies, quotes or reviews. If something can't be backed by a source we can show you, we leave it out.

Any example we include, such as a sample eulogy or obituary, is written by us for the guide, or is genuinely in the public domain and says where it came from.

Our own service

Mixtape Memories makes memorial and tribute videos. We only talk about that in our guides about memorial videos, slideshows, tributes and keepsakes, and we say plainly that it's our service when we do.

Our guides on the first steps after a death, choosing a funeral provider and paying for a funeral don't mention our service. They don't recommend, rank or review any funeral home, insurer or other business, and no business can pay to be mentioned in them.

Our page on grief support never mentions our service at all.

Pictures

The pictures in our guides are illustrative. They don't show real families, real people who have died or real services, unless the caption says so.

General information, not personal advice

Our guides are general information for people in Australia. They aren't legal, financial or medical advice, and rules can differ between states and territories. For a decision about your own situation, talk to the relevant agency or a qualified professional.

If you need someone to talk to right now, Lifeline is available any time on 13 11 14.

Keeping guides up to date

We review every guide at least once a year. Guides about money, government payments and legal steps are checked more often, because the figures and rules change. Each guide shows the date it was last updated.

Telling us about a mistake

If you think something in one of our guides is wrong, out of date or unclear, please email andrew@mixtapememories.app and tell us which guide and what you noticed. We'll look into it, and if it needs fixing we'll correct the guide and update its date.
